OPI Need Sunglasses? nail polish in sunlight

One of my favourite ways to celebrate the summer is to get a loud, bright mani-pedi, and OPI’s Need Sunglasses? is my go-to “Yay, summer’s here!” nail polish.  It’s a very rich, vibrant yellow that looks almost egg yolk-like on; I’d say it’s a cross between a creme and a jelly.

I used to have a thing against yellow nail polishes because a lot of them aren’t opaque enough and can make you look like you have gross, unhealthy nails.  But I saw Lisa Eldridge wearing a bright yellow polish in one of her videos and totally fell in love.  She was wearing Chanel, but I found this as a fantastic and much more affordable alternative.  This shade is flattering for most people, I think, and it’s bright and opaque enough to not look like unhealthy nails.

In terms of application, I’m kind of on the fence.  On the one hand, yellows typically apply streaky, and this one is no exception.  However, OPI’s formula tends to self-level beautifully, and while this doesn’t self-level as well as, say, a red, it does even out somewhat.  Here’s what the polish looks like with (from left to right) one, two, three, and four coats.

L-R: 1 coat, 2 coats, 3 coats, 4 coats

As you can see, there’s still a hint of a smile line with 4 coats but it’s obscure enough not to bother me.  Three and four coats look about the same so I usually only do 3.  When I come across nail polishes that require more than 3 coats, I’ll either give it away or throw it out – 1 or 2 is ideal.  This polish is very shiny all by itself but of course, I always wear top coat to prolong the life of my manicure.  I’m wearing 4 coats with Seche Vite in these pictures:

The egg yolk colour looks more apparent in the shade.

one more for good measure!

Conclusion: I love this polish and would recommend it if you’re looking for a nice colour to kick off your summer!  Feel free to send me photos of yourself sporting your favourite summer colours!
